THINGS YOU'LL NEED WHEN GOING TO NYSC CAMP (updated)

In the past I have seen people go absolutely crazy while trying to figure out what to and what not to take to their NYSC camps where ever they may have been posted. The main key is moderation, simple!
but the most important things you need to take along are your document and to make life simpler try to gather these documents before you leave for camp. So, see the list below:
LOL! it's an extract of the mail I sent to my sista (Yen) cos she's getting ready for camp and I thought, why not share with the rest of you guys.
Here they are:

16 Photocopies of Statement of Result
16 Photocopies of School ID Card
16-24 copies of passport photo
16 Photocopies of Call-up Letter
10 plain sheets of paper
A Pen
Stapler with your own pins (will save you a lot of begging)
glue

+
A Cardigan
4 Round-necked white T-Shirts
2-3 extra pairs of white Shorts
a pair of plain white Sneakers (the one NYSC will give may scatter, mine did)
2 pairs of white socks
A pair of slippers
DETTOL (very essential)
A Novel (very essential esp. if u read a lot, or if u get bored easily)

Money about 10 to 15,000 Naira should see you through the camp period modestly. but if you have to drink and hang out at The Mammy market a lot, then you can take more monies depending on how much you can finish, be wise though!

Your Toiletries (but if you are posted to the Up-North like Yobe and Maidugiri, pls do not spray perfumes/anything scented, or the flies won't stop hugging you).

Bucket, soap dish (buy at the camp site, don't stress yourself taking one to the place, they always sell in the camp)

Waist bag (try to buy this before you get to the camp, very very essential, U've gotta put all ur money in it and tie it round ur waist, cos some people wont come to camp with money and will steal)

Torchlight (there's a small, slim, silver one I really liked... U'll need this when u get up pretty early to Parade....or to do "toilet business")

Music (Ipod, MP3, Phone...any which one, just take ya music)

ATM card (u may need 2 run out and get dough...by the way, if you handle your cash well, you may not need to since they'll pay u ur 1st allowance on one of d last days of camp)

Food Flask (if you'll eat camp food, I only stood in line for camp food once, and almost got a slap from d lady serving cos I didn't understand the food, so Mammy Market was my savior, and might be yours too, in the end my food flask was gathering dust under my bed)

Sun Glasses: It can get really sunny, especially in the north, but I'll advice all to take sun glasses since you'll be standing on the parade ground for long hours. unless it's rainy season.

Please remember to also take the original documents, some camps will send you home if u don't have originals.

I have got a few questions from people who wanted to know if the photocopies are not too many. Well, you are better off taking a few more copies than less.

NB: don't pack loads of of unnecessary stuff sha... as for day clothes (mufti) pack one or two cos you'll only be allowed to go on mufti on Sundays and you have 3 Sundays, so why pack all your clothes? On the 1st day of registration, try to see that after you do your registration where u declare your call-up letter, you endeavor to register for accommodation as early as possible, if not you'll not have a place to sleep on ur 1st night in camp, and that's not funny.

The Camp Commandant (the soldier in charge) and the other soldiers may tell you that if you participate in parade, play volleyball, and do all they want you to do, you will end up being posted to a favorable place for you Primary Assignment - LIES! Soldiers ain't got that power at all, maybe the Camp director and some NYSC officials can help, but not all of them have the powers they claim.

have fun but never agree to be manipulated or coerced into anything by anyone and remember to give me all the gist cos I'll post them here for the world to see.

  2. Sorry please can i take my car to the camp and keep my stuffs in the car? Well that make sense because i cant do without internet and might need to carry my laptop and moreover, what time actually do days end? So i would know the time i have for myself and can i do anything afterwards? Thank you, Yinka.

  3. Hi Yinka... different camps have different rules. in saying that though, people bring their cars to the camp but you have to make sure the soldiers show u where to park. about leaving your stuff in the car...not really a good idea. how big is your Lappie, if it's not so big, then locking it away in your travel bag may be ur better option.
I'm an internet addict like you too but I had to make a tough decision not to travel with my laptop cos I wanted to travel light (one massive bag).
a normal camp day start at 5am, the drill (exercise) continues till about 7 or 8am, then breakfast (u should try and have ur bath before the breakfast time), there's lecture time, then lunch, afternoon drill starts at about 3pm and ends at 5pm (well, my camp was 5pm), then dinner time. u can hang out inside or outside ur rooms till about 10pm (lights out). In my camp, lights out meant no torchlight, no phone and of course no laptop...so I dunno if ur laptop may be in great use. how about ur phone? can u browse with it @ least for the 3 weeks.
Hope I answered ur questions, to an extent. Thanks for dropping by.
    what camp are going to?

Well i have a Blackberry and i guess that would serve me for the time been. I wouldnt go with my laptop anymore and i heard about the theft as well, so would rather just go with stuffs of no value it was stolen, camera, money and phones in my waistbag. I heard anything could be stolen...! No questions for now but as soon as i know my camp, i would keep you posted for advice before i leave. Thanks again, God Bless Brov!!!

  9. Hello Mike, look on the brighter side, it's better than Yobe state, it has more life if you are in the state capital, and you are likely to meet like minds (who hate the place) and make friends as you work on your redeployment if you want to. Keep your head up man... and pls stay away from heated up religious arguments.

That said, i have a question; my school id isn't in the best condition, my portrait cant be seen clearly (u can only tell its me by looking harder). So i was wondering if that will be a problem going through the registration in camp.
    P.S: i am with the batch C

  26. I would like to say that i am currently in service now and i followed

March batch A . I graduated last 2 years and when i was to serve i

didn't go cos i was posted to the north as in borno state for that

matter , the centre of bokoharam bombings. So i stayed at home, and i

contacted some officials to help me but they ate my money and nothing

was done, early last year i met Mr Ayodele and i explained my situation

to him , and how i was frauded , and he assured me and helped me, and

when i checked my name on the correction list it appeared and i was

posted exactly to the state i wanted to serve , I just want to thank

him for helping me out. You can call him on 09031791184 for issues

    concerning NYSC.
